Many Notion users, and by that we mean the people with elaborate personal dashboards full of databases, templates and relations, have a curious problem: they track their habits, but the habits themselves do not stick. The dashboard looks beautiful, but you forget to do the habit. Or worse: you forget to check it off once a week, so by the end of the month the data is wrong.
This article is about why an analog habit tracker (on paper or in a reusable notebook) often works better than a digital one, and how you combine it with your Notion stack without giving up either. A few research insights at play:
Research by psychologist Peter Gollwitzer (NYU) on implementation intentions (concrete if-then plans for habits) shows habits stick best when tied to a physical trigger or context. A notebook on your desk that you open every morning is such a trigger. A Notion page hidden in a sub-menu is not.
Digital tools are designed to reduce friction, which is usually good. But for habit tracking, friction works against you. The more steps between you and the act of checking off, the more likely you skip it. Notion: open the app, navigate to dashboard, click the right page, check the box. Four steps. Analog notebook: open it, check the box. Two steps.
A widely cited study by Phillippa Lally (University College London, 2009) showed it takes on average 66 days for a habit to become automatic, with a range of 18 to 254 days. Throughout that period you have to be consistent. One or two missed days does not break automation, but systematically forgetting does. The easier the check-off, the higher your chance of making 66 days.

Research on handwritten versus typed notes (including Mueller & Oppenheimer, 2014) suggests handwritten information is better remembered because the brain is more engaged with the writing process itself. For habit tracking specifically, the physical act of checking off has more impact than a digital toggle.
This is not a plea to ditch Notion. Notion is excellent for what it is: a central database where everything lives and you can find it back later. But for the daily checking of habits, analog works better. The combination is:
At the end of the week or month you can transfer the summary from your habit tracker to Notion as a consolidated number (e.g., this month 27 out of 30 days meditation), rather than creating an entry every day.
A paper habit tracker works fine, but you need a new page each month and at the end of the year you have a stack of old pages. A reusable notebook solves this:

Vertically the days of the month (1-31), horizontally your habits (maximum 5-10). One square per intersection. Tick if you did it, blank if you skipped.
This works especially well for binary habits (did I meditate: yes or no). Not for quantitative habits (how many words written).
Same grid, but instead of a tick you write a score (1-5) or number (words, minutes, kilometers). Slightly more effort, gives you trends.
Only your most important habit, with a consecutive streak of days. Goal: do not break the streak. Psychologically very powerful but fragile: one miss kills motivation.
No daily tracker, but weekly: once a week you write how your habits went. Less data, but works for people who find daily tracking too much.
For those who want to keep their Notion setup but do habit tracking analog:
The biggest payoff: you do not have to pull out your phone to check off. For a 5-second action, that is enough friction to skip.

Behavior change research recommends building maximum 3 new habits at the same time, because each new habit demands cognitive attention. For maintaining existing habits you can track more (5-10 is common in a habit tracker layout).
Yes. The idea (analog daily check-off + digital or monthly summary) works independently of which digital tool you use. It can work with Apple Notes, Obsidian, a Google Sheet, or no digital backup at all.
In a reusable notebook: write the start date on your page, and keep one page for streak tracking that you do not erase until the streak ends. Or keep only streak counters in Notion, and use paper for daily check-off.
It overlaps. Habit tracking is part of bullet journaling (as Ryder Carroll described it), but you can also do it standalone, without the rapid-logging method or monthly logs. Many people only do habit tracking and not a full bullet journal.
Notion is great for what it is: a second brain that ties everything together. But for the daily, physical act of checking off, analog often works better. The combination (analog for daily, digital for archive) gives you the best of both: low friction to check off, strong data to look back.
